Brown's new green spending will delay carbon build up by less than half a day

Gordon Brown has claimed that around 10 per cent of the UK package to stimulate the economy was directed towards "environmentally important technologies". But as a new nef report commissioned by Greenpeace shows, new funding for greening the economy amounts to just 0.6 per cent of the UK's total stimulus package. The new green spending will only delay the UK's climate change emissions less than half a day in three years time. The UK economy faces a triple crunch: a recession triggered by a major credit crisis, the looming reality of runaway climate change and critical resource depletion. As a result we face serious challenges to our livelihoods and increasing threats to our fuel and food security. Whatever the mistakes that allowed this situation to arise, there is growing international consensus that the best way out is via a Green New Deal policy package.

Carbon Taxes: Good for the environment, not bad for the economy

Most governments and politicians like to express their concern for climate change. In most cases this concern has not yet translated into sustainable policies, however. Research on the effectiveness of climate change policies has therefore to rely by and large on hypothetical policy simulations rather than the study of the effect of actual policies. There are exceptions, however. In 2001 the U.K. government introduced a tax on various energy fuels for industry - the Climate Change Levy (CCL).

A Green New Deal: Joined-up policies to solve the triple crunch of the credit crisis, climate change and high oil prices

The Guardian's G2: The final countdown

If you shout "fire" in a crowded theatre, when there is none, you understand that you might be arrested for irresponsible behaviour and breach of the peace. But from today, I smell smoke, I see flames and I think it is time to shout. I don't want you to panic, but I do think it would be a good idea to form an orderly queue to leave the building.
